God Never Changes

by Dr. Paul Chappell

"And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts. For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed."

Malachi 3:5-6

There is a place on my Grandfather Chappell's farm that is very special to me. To get there you must drive past the farm house and down the Colorado dirt road for a mile or two. On the left are pinion trees and sage brush and on the right are fields of red dirt. To the north are the La Salle Mountains and to the east are the San Juan Mountains. Cutting through the trees you can walk to a canyon ledge. With the beauty of God's creation all around, time seems to stand still. Perhaps the aspect I love the most about that place is that it never changes.

There can be no question that we live in a day of unprecedented change. As our nation progresses financially, technologically, and medically, the changes in our world are astounding. Even in the midst of constant change and progression in our day, our God never changes.

Malachi was the last of the Old Testament prophets. In the book of Malachi, he wrote to the remnant of Jews who had been restored from Babylonian captivity. During their captivity, their faith had not been consistent. They had fallen from serving God as they once had. But even though the Jewish people had changed, God had not changed.

One thing about our Lord that never changes is His Word. Psalm 119:89 says, "For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven." We can trust the promises God wrote for us in His Word over 2,000 years ago! They are still applicable to us today. Because God's Word never changes, we can trust it to help us in our lives each day.

Not only is God's Word unchanging, but His faithfulness never changes as well. Psalm 119:90 says, "Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth." God is faithful to us even when we are not faithful to Him! Even when we stray from God, He is there waiting for us to return to Him. He does not turn His back on us as His children and reject us; He loves us and desires to restore fellowship with us!

Aren't you glad to have a Saviour who is faithful even when we are not? Our Lord desires to restore fellowship with us even when we sin and turn from Him. Many times people may say they feel God is far from them, but in reality, our God never changes-it is we who turn from God and move away from Him! We must turn to God and stay in fellowship with Him for He will never change.

As we go through life, many times we can attach our hopes and dreams to physical things. These things could change, and our hope could be lost. But when we place our hope and trust in God's Word and in His faithfulness to us, we will never be disappointed! The promises He made in His Word are applicable for us today. We can trust them to guide us as we live for Him each day. We must look to God and His Word, for He will never change.

Are you seeking guidance from God's Word? It is the only book we can trust to change our lives! Also, are you staying faithful to God? God's faithfulness never fails, but we must be careful to remain faithful to Him as well. Spend time in God's Word. Seek His promises and apply them to your life today. Also, come back to Him if you have strayed. Ask Him to help you remain faithful to Him.
